The cheapest option to watch Freeview channels on your TV for free (without having to pay for cable or satellite) is to use an indoor aerial. All you have to do is plug the antenna (a tiny indoor one, or a larger one on your roof) into the TV and scan for channels if your TV supports Freeview (which all TVs built and sold in the UK after 2012 do – if not, you can acquire a stand-alone Freeview Box).

Even the best indoor aerial won’t help if you don’t have excellent reception (for example, if you’re too far away from the transmitter) – it simply won’t obtain a strong enough signal to translate into TV channels.

It all boils down to connecting an aerial and trying it out to see if the signal in your location is strong enough for Freeview.

However, you may start by using the Digital UK Postcode Checker, which allows you to enter your location and get information about reception in your region as well as the number of Freeview channels you should be able to watch with that level of coverage.

If your Freeview signal is weak, a signal booster may be able to help. Sometimes.

What Is a tv antenna amplifier?

It’s simple to explain what a signal booster does: your aerial “catches” the Freeview transmissions in the air and converts them into information that your TV can understand. The signal is sent at a specified strength by the antenna (depending on what it can acquire from the air) – for example, 60dB.


The aerial is then connected to a cable, which transmits the signal to your television. The signal, on the other hand, loses intensity as it travels through the cable, and by the time it reaches your TV, it’s down to – say – 30dB.

The signal booster simply amplifies that signal – by 20dB, for example – and sits as close to the AERIAL as possible. So the cable will now transmit an 80dB signal, which will be reduced to 50dB by the time it reaches the TV, giving you greater coverage and, ideally, clearer Freeview channels.

The aerial booster (which must be connected to a power source) can also be used to split the signal amongst multiple TVs from a single aerial (indoor or outdoor). You’ll still lose some signal strength along the way, but owing to the amplification, you’ll be able to transfer “enough” signal from your antenna to your house’s several TVs.

Will a Freeview Indoor Aerial Booster Help With Reception?

The quick answer is that it happens from time to time. Signal amplifiers have advantages and disadvantages, and they are only useful in particular conditions.

To begin, keep in mind that if your area has no service (or a very poor signal), a booster will make no difference. There’s nothing to amplify if the reception is zero. The same is true for very weak signals: even if the amplifier boosts them slightly, you won’t be able to see Freeview stations.
